Algueira, Pizarra 2021 750MLThey kept the 2021 Pizarra in their portfolio, produced using grapes from different vineyards on slate-rich soils, one of them Carballocobo, and includes some 15% each Brancellao and Caíño grapes from younger vines, which makes it livelier. Like many other reds, it was produced partly with full clusters that were foot trodden and with indigenous yeasts in troncoconic French oak vats and matured in 225-liter barrels and 2,000 liter foudre for 18 months. It's darker—the Mencía has thick skins and the soil gives a note of earth—and it's a little more rustic. It comes in with moderate ripeness and 13% alcohol, balanced and harmonious but with quite a lot of tannins that might require a little more time and/or powerful food. 980 bottles produced. Almaviva 2021 750ML2021 was an overall cooler year than 2020, with more elegant wines with more finesse and less angular tannins. The sleek 2021 Almaviva is a good example of that, still very young and still marked by the élevage in oak after spending 20 months in French oak barrels, 71% of them new and the rest only second use. The final blend was 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Carmenere (from Peumo), 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, a variety that might gain in percentage, as they have even planted some more with the idea to possibly replace Merlot in the medium or long term. It's not a shy wine, hitting the scale at 15% alcohol and with mellow acidity, 4.65 grams (tartaric) and a pH of 3.81 The fruit is dark, ripe and spicy, nothing green about it; it's a little shy, less expressive than the warmer years are early on and a little more discreet but with potential to develop in bottle. The tannins are still present, and it should benefit from some more time in bottle. The 2019 had more volume than the 2018, and the 2020 is closer to the 2019 than the 2018. 200,000 bottles produced. With medium body and more texture than is found in most 2013s, it should drink well for 8-10 years. Ao Yun 2019 750MLThis is the best vintage of Ao Yun to date and also the highest-scoring Chinese wine I have ever reviewed. It, therefore, requires a more detailed account to understand why. The 2019 Ao Yun is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, 10% Syrah and 6% Petit Verdot (this latter emanating from the village of Sinong). Notably, Merlot did not make the grade in 2019, which was less to do with vintage but, according to winemaker Maxence Dulou, more a function of Merlot vines at an adolescent stage of development (at five to six years of age, Dulou feels Merlot doesn’t produce the most interesting fruit compared with younger or older vines). The relatively cooler and wetter winter prior to 2019 gave the vines decent reserves, but the drier and warmer than expected spring meant some irrigation was required around budburst and flowering.750MLAsk about this
Ao Yun 2020 750MLTop 100 World Wines 2024 - James Suckling Super classy, fragrant nose that immediately brings demureness with its currants, graphite, paprika, cigar box, tobacco leaves and a touch of cocoa powder. This is a juicier expression of Ao Yun on the palate, with lots of brightness and probably a little less weight and opulence than 2019, but certainly more agility, firmness, tension and freshness. Refined, layered, long and silky, but the tannins are fresh and present. Extremely long and nervy. The best Ao Yun to date that zeroes in on balance. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 19% cabernet franc, 10% merlot, 6% syrah and 5% petit verdot. 30% new barrels, 30% old barrels and 40% stoneware jars from Sichuan. Drink from 2025, and the wine should age beautifully for the next two decades, if not longer.750MLAsk about this

Armand Rousseau, Chambertin Grand Cru 2016 750MLAs is often the case, this is more restrained than the Bèze and more deeply pitched as well with its cooler array of strikingly spicy red and dark currant aromas that are more heavily cut with freshly turned earth scents along with plenty of floral and sauvage influences, all of which is again trimmed in just enough oak influence to point out. The exceptionally rich, dense and highly energetic full-bodied flavors brim with both dry extract and a pungent minerality on the brilliantly complex and explosively long finish. This is a classic example of power without weight because despite the imposing size of the '16 Chambertin, the overall impression is one of harmony and grace. It has contained ripeness and good freshness and balance, and it's juicy and tasty, with fine tannins and a velvety mouthfeel. Serious is the word. 65,000 bottles produced. It has a silky palate with velvety, unnoticeable tannins and is juicy, soft and tasty. 80,000 bottles produced. Ata Rangi, Pinot Noir 2022 750MLThe 2022 Pinot Noir is lighter than the 2020 and softer than the 2021. In 2022, the decision was made not to release any single-vineyard wines "because they didn't express the character that we were hoping for in that vintage," says Winemaker Helen Masters. On the nose, there's white strawberry, cherry, pomegranate pearls and even a hint of raspberry leaf. In the mouth, the wine is pink peppercorn, open and yet compact, open-weave without being loose. There's clarity. It's lovely. The best fruit from the three single vineyards and the older estate vineyards make up this wine, yet the overall volume of the Ata Rangi Pinot Noir remains the same. There is a sense of purpose about these aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fine cohesion and plenty of melted red berry fruit laced with tobacco, allspice and white pepper.
