Valdespino, Calle Ponce Single Vineyard Palo Cortado — 75cl / BottleValdespino's Palo Cortado Vieja C.P. is from the same single, high-altitude vineyard, Macharnudo that their flagship Inocente Fino comes. The site is owned by Valdespino since 1264 and is probably Jerez' most iconic vineyard. The wine - as many Sherry - is not age-certified, but the average age of the bottled wine is 25 years. Distinct orange colour that beautifully combines the richness of Oloroso and some of the crispness of Amontillado. On the nose hints of an older cellar point to an old wine, with plenty of lactic notes, sweet vanilla, iodine, bitter oranges and spices. The palate shows high acidity, is clean and delineated, rich in caramelised flavours and tastes pleasantly bone dry. A lesser known detail... Bodegas Toro Albala, Don PX Convento Selección, 1946 — 75cl / Bottle"This wine will survive all of us.... Drink it if you ever have the privilege to do so from 2013-2060. Wine Advocate 100." Don PX Convento Selección comprises aged wines from various generations, which have been left to age in amontillado barrels for a specific ageing process, which allows wine and wood to blend, with spectacular results. Don PX grapes are the speciality of Toro Albalá and each is treated exclusively, from harvest to desiccation. It is this total control process that gives the wines their unique character and their creator strives to excite the wine taster with each one. The Bodega's bottling system is called Convento Selección (convent range) after the Cistercian monks’ serialisation system. All production is carried out by hand according to the Rule of Saint Benedict, “living off the work of human hands”. This is a sherry that defies words. Layers of plums and figs, and hints of herbs are all wrapped into one never-ending velvet palate. Hints of saline can be detected, too. This wine is after seven decades still good for many more, and its easy to imagine this one to last well over 100 years! Aged in barrels with longstanding experience in keeping exceptional wines of the same style, the result is this unique and complex oloroso with its high concentration of bouquets. This exceptional oloroso is the result of prolonged ageing in wood and in contact with the open butts of must from the wine proceeding from a Palomino grape that never had a yeast coat. Many years as a vintage, and many more under the criaderas and soleras system produce the effect found in this wine, with a mahogany colour with copper tones and a nose of notes of nuts, toasted and balsamic notes, a sweet aroma and highly evolved venosity. In the mouth, it is velvety, powerful and harmonious, with great retronasal qualities and persistence, all due to the concentration of its components, which after more than forty years of ageing result in this intensity and complexity of aromas. Through a cautious and passionate research Casanova di Neri has used the most sophisticated scientific investigations to determine the clones, rootstocks, cultivation practices, plant density per hectare and every possible particular to obtain excellent Sangiovese grapes. 2015 will be remembered as a truly textbook year. Winter was essentially mild with temperatures within the average and abundant rainfall in January and February. The budding occurred in the second week of April. The second part of April and the entire month of May were rich in rainfall and sunny days; all this led to a regular development of the vegetative cycle, to an excellent accumulation of water in the soil and a regular and prosperous flowering that ended around the end of May. June and July were dry and warm, slightly above average. During the second week of August, precipitations lowered the temperatures and helped the ripening process considerably. August and September continued with significant differences in temperature range between day and night which led to a balance between acidity, tannins and almost perfect grape sugars. During the spring and early summer seasons, the weather was dry and sunny, supporting the even growth of the vines. July was very warm and dry with temperatures 5°C higher than the norm. Thanks to our established agronomic practices, such as tilling the land in autumn, green manure sowing and canopy management, the vines were not overly affected by the high July temperatures. In the first week of August, two significant rain showers brought some respite for the plants, reducing temperatures and allowing aromas, anthocyanins and essential tannins to condense. The great care taken in the vineyard, together with the typical characteristics of this unmistakable terroir, resulted in an outstanding harvest. The Sangiovese grapes were picked by hand and carefully selected after arriving in the cellar. In addition, flavours of lime, toasted almond, and acacia flower can be detected. The palate is fresh and mineral but an incredible density to the wine imparts a long finish. The vintage is already unusual for its power and freshness. An exceptionally wet winter fully restocked the natural aquifers and trigged an early budding in the spring; the vines bloomed about ten days early. Between April and July the weather was sporadic and alternated between cool rain and warm sunny days. The warmth and sun were sufficient to encourage good growth and fruit development. August, however, was cooler than normal and delayed further maturation of the fruit. The onset of an Indian summer in early September through mid-October allowed the grapes to ripen fully and begin to concentrate. Rain storms began again in mid-October creating ideal weather conditions for the development of Botrytis cinerea. Though the cool summer was an ominous sign for the vintage, the exceptionally warm fall allowed for excellent if slow fruit development resulting in a very good wine.800gAsk about this

Harvesting started on 17 September and came a few days of rain (19 and 20 September) allowing Botrytis to settle in, which it did slowly and very regularly. With the arrival of an east wind in early October, concentration started and the harvest of very concentrated grapes was brought in very quickly and in large quantities, which is rather unusual. Harvesting ended on 20 October, with a total of three 'tries'. Château Suduiraut 2009 has a very appealing, bright golden yellow colour. Its complexity is echoed on the nose: candied tropical fruit, white flowers, gingerbread, and gunflint give together a rich yet lively overall result. The palate is very powerful, with aromas of roast pineapple, candied apricot and barley sugar. Its smoothness is always underpinned by wonderful freshness, giving it great elegance. The long, full-bodied finish reveals spices, candied fruit and vanilla. This legendary Suduiraut is still coming into its own and requires a little more patience. Good potential here. The 2017 vintage at Domaine de Montille started off with a very tricky spring. The vineyards on the slopes withstood the frost, unlike in 2016, where the frost damaged, the vineyard untypically, unevenly and mainly in the white vineyards. The 2017 spring concentrated the cold in low lying parcels meaning that the majority of vignerons lost buds in their Bourgogne or even Aligoté parcels. The loss is usually considered acceptable compared to losing fruit in village or primer cru appellations. The tannins are very well integrated in the fruits with a rather light texture and silky, comparable to the 2010 and 2002 vintages. What’s surprising and enjoyable, is the salinity present in the whites which is quite rare. Intense and multi-layered, the nose has lovely fresh citrus fruit as well as passion fruit, lemon lime, white peaches with touches of vanilla. Rich and zesty characters carry on, yet as the wine opens up the wet stone and chalky characters rise and take you to the Aconcagua Costa estate. The strong mineral background, a stamp of our Aconcagua Costa estate, balances the overall richness, giving a superb refinement. The finish is layered, very long and elegant and will age gracefully. The grapes are hand-picked in the early morning hours to ensure the fruit arrives at the winery cool and ready for 100% whole cluster pressing. Grapes are carefully hand-sorted before being gently pressed. Whole clusters were pressed and the juice was before being moved by gravity flow into small stainless steel tanks for decanting 24 hours and French Oak barrels for 100% native yeast fermentation. 55% of blend underwent malolactic fermentation progressed slowly in the cellar until an ideal acid- balance was achieved.
